Real silver is beautiful, but it needs a little attention now and then. With the right care your silver jewellery stays bright for years and you prevent it from turning dull or black.
Why does silver turn black?
Silver reacts to oxygen, sulphur and moisture in the air, which gives it a dark haze. It is completely harmless and easy to remove.
Preventing tarnish
Put your jewellery on last when getting ready, and take it off first. Keep it away from perfume, body lotion, hairspray and chlorine. Showering, exercising or doing the dishes? Set your ring, bracelet or necklace aside.
Cleaning silver jewellery
A soft silver polishing cloth works fastest for everyday tarnish. For small details, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, rinse well and pat dry. Avoid scouring pads and harsh products.
Extra care for vermeil
Vermeil (gold-plated silver) has a thin layer of precious metal and is therefore more delicate. Never polish it with an abrasive or silver dip; a soft cloth is enough.
Storing it well
Keep your jewellery dry and preferably separate — in a pouch or compartment box — so pieces do not scratch each other.
